please contact Symantec corporation.
Introduction
The latest virus definitions
for Symantec Antivirus and Norton Internet Security
contain a reference to the file "OSSMTP.DLL".
When a scan is run on the affected computer, Symantec
Antivirus will detect this file, erroneously identifying
it as a virus, and remove it from the computer.
Office Tools Pro will detect the absence of this
file, and respond with the error message, "There
is a broken or missing reference." Office Tools
Pro will then shut itself down.
This file is a legitimate
library. It is not a virus. Its purpose is to
facilitate SMTP Email functionality in Office
Tools Pro (and other legitimate software). However,
this file has recently been associated with spammers
and virus writers, because these people also use
it to send illicit emails.
Who is affected
If you use Office Tools
Pro and Symantec Antivirus on the same computer,
and you have recently updated your virus definitions,
then you could be affected by this problem. If
you suddenly receive the error message, "There
is a broken or missing reference, cannot continue,
Missing reference C:\WINNT\System32\OSSMTP.DLL",
and you are also running Symantec Antivirus, then
you are definitely affected by this problem.
How to correct the
problem
To correct this problem,
it will be necessary to restore the OSSMTP.DLL
file to each computer running Office Tools Pro.
To do this, you must first disable Symantec Antivirus
and Symantec Internet Security on the affected
computer. Then, download the following file to
your desktop:
http://www.officetoolspro.com/temp/ossmtp.zip
Once the file is downloaded, unzip the enclosed
file to your desktop (OSSMTP.DLL), and then copy
this file to your C:\Windows\system32 or C:\WINNT\system32
(whichever one your computer has) directory. Once
you have copied the file to your System32 directory,
you will then need to register the file on your
computer. To do this, click the Start button in
the lower left hand corner of your screen, click
RUN, and type in the following command:
regsvr32 ossmtp.dll
...and then click the
OK button. Once you have done this, you should
be able to restart Office Tools Pro, and it should
run normally. NOTE: This process must be performed
on EVERY WORKSTATION that has Office Tools Pro
installed.
You will now need to tell
Symantec Antivirus to ignore this file during
future scans. Otherwise Symantec Antivirus will
just remove the file again, How this is done is
beyond the scope of this article, but the following
Microsoft Word document describes this (and the
procedure illustrated above) in detail.
